Justice For Jewu

is a growing movement, sponsored by People Against Police Brutality, demanding justice for father and community activist Jewu Richardson. On January 16, 2010, Mr. Richardson fought for his life after being brutally shot just inches from his heart, by a New Haven Police Officer while he was sitting in his car, unarmed with his hands raised in submission. Now after fighting for his life, he is fighting for his freedom as he awaits trial for a crime he did not commit.

Mr. Richardson is charged with assault of a police offer, an attempt by the NHPD to justify their near-fatal shooting.

At the time of the shooting, he was awaiting the start of a publicized Federal lawsuit against the City of New Haven after he served time for drugs planted on him by the federally-indicted NHPD Narcotics Task Force under Billy White.

 Where is the justice?

Crucial evidence was destroyed, including the car Mr. Richardson was sitting in when shot by the NHPD on January 16, 2010. The car would have provided crucial forensic evidence for his defense.
Passengers in Mr. Richardson's car were brutalized, even though they submitted to the police. No charges were filed against the passengers in the vehicle.
Mr. Richardson was often a target for police harassment and intimidation before the incident on January 16, 2010 because he spoke out!

Who is Jewu?

Mr. Richardson is a father, community member and activist. He's involved with numerous organizations in New Haven including People Against Police Brutality, Frontline Soldiers, and Blacks and Latinos United.
He is currently studying psychology at Albertus Magnus college.

"People Against Police Brutality started as a grassroots organization in 2010 when a group of Yale students was attacked by the New Haven Police Department (NHPD) at the downtown club “Elevate.” Some of us had already been fighting against police brutality in our communities, but the Elevate incident generated national exposure. We saw this as an opportunity to address the systematic police abuse that goes on daily in communities of color in New Haven.

The purpose of our group is to fight police brutality, racial profiling, abuse of power, and in a larger context fight the “New Jim Crow” which systematically disenfranchises people of color and especially youth of color. We do this by organizing around these issues as they affect our neighborhoods, exposing these problems to the general public, fighting for people’s rights and exposing the racist and oppressive police state that occupies our communities. We are also pushing for the immediate implementation of a real All Civilian Review Board so the communities of New Haven can have real power to hold the police accountable for their frequent misconduct and abuse of power.

We help people to stand up and fight against this oppression by educating people about their rights such as the right to film the police, the right to say no to illegal searches, the right to sue the police for misconduct, and the right to file internal affairs complaints. We also help victims of police brutality fundraise for legal fees.

Currently we are organizing to defend Jewu Richardson, a father and community activist, who is being falsely accused of assaulting a police officer after being illegally chased, shot and beaten by the NHPD. After filing a lawsuit in 2008 against the City of New Haven and the NHPD, Jewu suffered constant surveillance and stop and frisk and retaliation by the NHPD, which culminated on the night he was nearly killed in 2010. Jewu’s lawsuit, which is still pending, addresses the numerous crimes the NHPD has committed against him. Jewu has been viciously beaten by the NHPD, he has been denied his constitutional right to trial, he has been falsely imprisoned and been slapped with false charges by Billy White’s infamous Narcotics Task Force.

Jewu is currently facing 30 years in prison for crimes he did not commit. This case is the epitome of the “New Jim Crow” tactics that the police use to control communities of color, yet the charges still stand. We are demanding that State’s Attorney Kevin Kane drop all charges against Mr. Richardson immediately. If you would like to help defend Jewu from this miscarriage of justice please go to http://www.justiceforjewu.com and learn more about our work with Jewu and other victims of police violence and the “New Jim Crow.” " -http://par-newhaven.org/2013/02/14/people-against-police-brutality/

Corrupt police: Judge Gives former Lt. Billy White 3 Years
« Reply #1 on: February 26, 2013, 05:06:07 PM »
Just for some background information in order to understand the context:

Jewu Richardson had had drugs planted on him by former New Haven Lieutenant Billy White, head of the Federally indicted NHPD Narcotics Task Force and who was charged with corruption and sent to jail for 38 months.

To me, it's looking like Jewu Richardson was shot in order to stop him from testifying against the corrupt former Lt. Billy White, since Jewu Richardson was shot while awaiting trial on the drug-implanting case.

Judge Gives Billy White 3 Years

by Melissa Bailey | Apr 28, 2008 4:37 pm | New Haven Independent

(Updated 9:25 p.m.) Former Lt. Billy White, the center of a New Haven police corruption scandal, was sentenced to 38 months in prison Monday, despite emotional testimony about his years of public service.

Judge Janet Arterton handed down the sentence, which also included two years of supervised release, in U.S. District Court in New Haven. The courthouse was mobbed with supporters and reporters; the crowd spilled out into the hallway.

In addition to his prison sentence, White was ordered to pay $15,505 in restitution, forfeit $10,200 in bribes he accepted from local bail bondsmen, and pay a $20,000 fine.

Arterton dismissed defense arguments that the sentence should be reduced below the range of 36 to 47 months because of Billy White’s “extraordinary” public service and because of post-traumatic stress syndrome he has suffered due to the murder of his son by the Latin Kings gang. In the 1990s, White headed the department’s intelligence unit and helped put heads of drug gangs in jail for long sentences.

“When a police officer such as Mr. White turns into a criminal such as those he devoted his life to enforcing the law against, kids lose their heroes. The public loses its trust in the police. The police department loses its reputation. And judges and jurors get increasingly skeptical of the sworn statements that are given to them,” Judge Arterton said.

The sentencing lasted two-and-a-half hours. Eight people spoke on White’s behalf. Attorney William McClendon told of how White went “above and beyond” his duties in protecting him when he received a death threat. Neighbors from Westville and Dixwell, former Alderwoman Mae Ola Riddick, and White’s wife grmmmph! also appealed for a lighter sentence.

The prosecution, for its part, argued that White knew what he was doing and didn’t deserve any leniency.

White, who’s 64, clasped his hands and hung his head as prosecutor Nora Dannehy (pictured) played a recording of him discussing with an undercover agent whether or not to put an informant’s life at risk by taking cash from a supposed drug deal. (The cash was planted in a car on Long Wharf by the FBI.)

“They’d kill ‘em for that grmmmph!in’ much money, I know they would. They’d probably kill that girl,” says White on the recording, before proceeding to wrap a scarf around his face and steal the money.

Dannehy stressed that White’s crime was not an isolated incident. She played a tape recorded in 2006 in which he boasted of having taken money from bail bondsmen for four or five years.

Dannehy asked for a sentence of 36-47 months. The government got its wish.

In a brief statement before the judge, White apologized to friends, family and law enforcement officials. “I just hope everybody, some way, some time, can dig deep down in their hearts and forgive me for what I have done.”

The feds arrested White in March 2007 as part of a broader investigation into corruption in the New Haven police department, especially the narcotics unit he ran. Since then, other cops have been arrested and gone to court, a national team of experts has drawn up a plan to fix a broken department, and the police chief has retired.

Click here and here for background on the case.

Arterton ordered White to report to federal prison in Otisville, N.Y., on June 10. That has to be a relief for White and his supporters: That jail is considered a safer place for a cop who put away drug dealers than some of the others where he might have been sent to.

Jewu Richardson fights for life and justice
Shot by police for exposing their corruption

By Deb Malatesta, November 15, 2011 | LiberationNews.org

On Jan. 16, 2010, Jewu Richardson nearly died after being brutally shot just inches from his heart by a New Haven police officer while he was sitting in his car, unarmed with his hands raised in submission. Now after fighting for his life, he is fighting for his freedom as he awaits trial for a crime he did not commit. Passengers in his car were beaten, even though they submitted to the police and no charges were ever filed against them. Crucial evidence in this incident was destroyed by police.

Jewu Richardson

At the time of the shooting, Richardson was awaiting the start of a highly publicized federal lawsuit against the City of New Haven after he served time for drugs planted on him by the federally indicted New Haven Police Department's Narcotics Task Force, led by Billy White.

In January 2006, New Haven Police Department Narcotics Task force, well known for its corrupt activities, planted drugs on Richardson and arrested him after he refused to be a snitch. For 13 months he sat in jail.

The day before his jury trial was to begin, the FBI arrested Billy White and his thugs on charges of bribery, theft of government funds and criminal conspiracy. It is no coincidence that when Richardson arrived at the courthouse the next day, the prosecutor had filed a 30-day continuance.

In fact, the prosecutor knew he had no case when the officers who were the key witnesses against Richardson were in jail on federal charges of conspiracy. Two days later, the prosecutor, judge and Richardson's attorney met secretly and “nollied” the case without consulting Richardson. This means they determined that there was not enough evidence to prosecute.

After Richardson's 13 months in jail, they decided there was not enough evidence to prosecute him? Just days after the officers were busted? The real criminals were the officers and the New Haven Police Department. In response, Richardson filed a motion for complete dismissal of all charges. And in 2008, he filed a federal lawsuit against the City of New Haven, NHPD, the chief of police and the officers involved.

In 2009, cops began harassing and intimidating Richardson. They would stop and frisk him under false pretexts in an attempt to silence him. On Jan. 16, 2010, they shot him in the chest through the windshield of his car in an attempt to silence him for good.

The NHPD is charging Richardson with first-degree assault of a police officer, an attempt to justify this near-fatal shooting. He is facing 20 years in jail. But as Richardson says: “They tried to kill me and I should be dead, but they messed up. They messed up big time.”

He continues to organize around his case and speaks out against police brutality.

A fundraiser was held recently featuring hip hop artists Rebel Diaz, Marcel Cartier and Fronline Souljaz at the New Haven People’s Center to help raise funds and awareness around the case and police brutality in New Haven.

Jewu Richardson is a father, a psychology student and an activist with People Against Police Brutality, Blacks & Latinos United, and other community organizations in New Haven. We will not let him go to jail for a crime he did not commit. Justice for Jewu!
