New Nuke Plants Can Be Stopped; No Favors for Georgia's Nuclear Plants

Nuclear plants don't have public support and they can't make it in the "free market" because nobody other than the government (meaning, we the taxpayers) will guarantee loans or subsidize their insurance.

Georgia's double-reactor Vogtle project has been sold thanks to federal loan guarantees. Even though President Obama wants to lavish $8.33 billion in financing on Southern Company, the company is balking at the terms imposed by the White House Office of Management and Budget.

So are Georgia ratepayers, already facing higher payments that Southern Company gets to keep whether or not it ever builds anything.

This is corporate welfare at its worst.

Tell the Office of Management and Budget not to lower its standards, and in fact to raise them. Let's make this the last time new, taxpayer-subsidized nuclear construction is considered in this country!
