Cyprus fails to comply with EU rules on trafficking

Cyprus has failed to properly comply with its obligations under EU laws on a series of issues, including human trafficking, according to a European Commission report announced on Wednesday.

Cyprus – among other countries – was asked to notify the Commission of national measures taken in order to fully comply with the EU human trafficking law. According to the Commission, if Cyprus does not comply with its obligations as a member state, the EU’s executive body may refer the country to the Court of Justice.

The EU directive on trafficking should have been adopted by Cyprus more than six months ago. It is considered as being very important since it does not only aim at helping victims of human trafficking but also prevents others from falling victim, according to the Commission’s announcement.

The EU has also asked Cyprus to adopt national measures on environmental issues and also to transpose EU regulations on taxation and postal services into national law.
