Magnitsky Act is 'futile exercise in hypocrisy' – Russian lawmaker

The Russian Lower House’s foreign affairs head Alexey Pushkov has described the American Magnitsky Act that was enacted by President Obama 11 months ago in conjunction with a measure to scrap the Jackson-Vanik amendment as "futile exercise in hypocrisy" on the part of the US Congress and the White House.
Writing in his Twitter account Friday, he said the Act did nothing but sour relations between Moscow and Washington.

Together with making Russia a regular trading partner of the US, the Magnitsky Act imposed financial and travel restrictions on Russian officials accused by Washington of complicity in the prison death of the Russian lawyer Sergey Magnitsky in 2009.

Russia denounced the Act as an attempt to put pressure on its judicial system. It responded in kind, by imposing similar restrictions on American officials involved in abuse of rights. Its "Magnitsky Counter-List" now contains 11 names.
