Pope Benedict XVI Resigns: The Statement

By ABC NEWS | Good Morning America

The below is the offical Vatican translation of what the Pope said today regarding his resignation.

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church.

After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.

For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

From the Vatican, 10 February 2013 BENEDICTUS PP XVI

Well, he didn't succeed in his mission: I think there's too much corruption in the Vatican.

I hope (one day) we'll have a perfect Pope, who really represents our modern society: a Pope who defends whistleblowers and Anonymous, a pope who defends poor countries and denounces any kind of war, who denounces profits made by arms company, calling for peace between religions...

Vatican is too far from the people, they should be more aware of what's going on in the world. They should defend people, instead of defending their privileges and their seats.

Nice hope Kimono. I hope so too.

The Vatican is a State and the Pope is the chief of a Government like whateverelse politician.

Vatican City doesn't even follow the EU rules because it is an "outsider".

I can only imagine what is passing through Vatican City...

'Have no idea about what reasons have pushed Pope Benedict to give dimissions. I only know that this is the 2nd Pope (only) that has resigned dimissions in almost 2.000 years of history of the Vatican; the other Pope was "Celestino V" and he had resigned dimissions for how dirty was the situation in Vatican.
Now the things are different than in the middleage.
But the Vatican is still a State and when a Pope like this resigns dimissions it actually means that the Chief of a State, a very powerful State, is deciding to leave his position.
It's actually as if Obama decides to leave his President role.

I'm asking myself why, because this is a very strong move and sign coming from Vatican City.

... mmmmh may be we could check WL files to see if there is something going on... GIFiles are more recent... I'm curious now.

Surely, there must have been something very important to make him take this decision... Facing recent scandals in the church, it was certainly difficult for him to face media pressure. Finally, Vatican is facing the same problems as the rest of governments in the world: too much secrecy kills the power.
