Discovery under Antarctica Ice Sheets Suggests Life May Exist On Other Planets

The mystery of the origin of life is one that science may never completely solve. The persisting “Big Bang Theory” suggests that the universe spontaneously formed and over billions of years molecules fused to together and continued to evolve into organisms but even doesn’t explain the historical links that science continues to uncover.

And it doesn’t explain how this planet is the only one in our solar system capable of explaining life—any kind of life.

Take a recent discovery in a lake in Antarctica, however. Under the frozen sheets that cover the continent, scientists have discovered tiny inklings of life in one the most extreme ecosystems on this planet of ours. This discovery has raised many questions about the possibility for life on other planets. After all, if signs of life can be present in freezing temperatures, perhaps life could be present on planets further away from the sun than earth is.

In a statement regarding the findings, Tech Times reports “The environment in [Antarctica’s] Lake Whillans might not be all that different from environments on a number of icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter.” The report goes on to detail that one of Jupiter’s moons (Europa) and one of Saturn’s moons (Enceladus) have both been found to be home to vast reservoirs of water beneath frozen sheets of ice.

Since scientists made the discovery of nearly 4,000 microbial organisms beneath the water in Antarctica, who is to say that space exploration could not uncover a similar finding on one of these moons?

Indeed, this is a wonderful question to ask and modern science is poised to, at least, attempt to answer it.

Of course, time will tell if this is an answer we will learn in the life time, but at least, for now, the possibility of life on a moon of Saturn certainly remains fascinating.
