POLICE have broken up a protest by Julian Assange supporters at the US Consulate General in Melbourne.

About 20 people had been sitting in the foyer of the St Kilda Rd building when they were asked to leave by the building manager about 12pm.

Police spokeswoman Belle Nolan said officers had been monitoring the protestors and had to take action when they refused to move.

The Herald Sun captured photos of a number of protestors being carried or dragged out of the building by officers.

Ms Nolan said police did not charge any of the protesters, adding that there was no damage to any property and no injuries to anyone involved.
