Via twitter: CONFIRMED: Kristinn Hrafnsson and Joseph Farrell from #Wikileaks will attend the Intl. Antirepression Congress

TOWARDS SOCIETIES WITHOUT REPRESSION

The International Congress Against Repression is an event in favor of civil rights such as freedom of speech, protest and assembly. The affected groups have the need to deal with this and the ways to confront it.

During two days we will analyse the repression trend that threats the advancement of civil rights on an international level.

The speakers will represent human rights, animal rights, ecology / environmentalism, gay rights, freedom of speech and workers rights.

22 speakers from various fields (activists, journalists, lawyers, judges, state attornies, sociologists, political scientists, philosophers and psychologists) and different countries (Austria, United States, Spain, England, Iceland, Norway and Syria) will participate.

STATEMENT:

Thousands of reasons
Posted on November 12, 2012

The International Congress Against Repression is an event designed to analyze the repression and criminalization of social movements, to share experiences and reviews about it, to learn from prominent cases and how they can help us to meet this challenge together.

Social movements find us necessarily faced with two forces: those who benefit directly from the injustice that we try to eradicate and the continuous repressive force of the state, often mobilized to defend the interests of “number one” even if it means curtailing civil rights.

In addition to inviting activists of various social movements (human rights, environmental, LGBT, union ) we have also invited journalists such as Kristinn Hrafnsson (Wikileaks), Martxelo Otamendi (former director of Euskaldunon Egunkaria), Pilar Velasco (Cadena Ser) or Edurne Elizondo (Berria) among others. Journalists are continually persecuted, harassed, threatened and sometimes killed for doing their job. Their research makes them a threat to those who claim that certain information should never be published. From this perspective, journalists find themselves at the same crossroads as activists of various social movements who conduct research about their causes.

The Congress is organized by Animal Equality because besides being an organization that, among other activities, practices civil disobedience to promote positive social change for animals, we are concerned about the increasing criminalization of activism that we are seeing today. The international trend of repression against the animal rights movement (U.S., England, Austria, Spain …), which touches us most closely, will be treated in depth in the conference, but this event is not about our particular struggle and the reflections that arise from knowing these cases are equally applicable to other social movements.

These are some of the reasons why we think this conference is necessary. Very necessary. But we must not forget the thousands of other reasons. Whether in Spain or the United States, Austria, England, Syria, Egypt, India, Mexico and other countries thousands-if not millions – of people suffer repression from states that do not respect human rights and who try to stop those who work to end the current injustices. Therefore, there are thousands of reasons for organizing this conference and for all of them, we invite you to come and share this very special occasion with us.

NB: This event will take place in the "Ateneo" in Madrid on December 6&7th, 2012.

Here is a video of the event: http://new.livestream.com/accounts/1801774/antirepresion  (third video from the top)

It is in spanish. Of course, Kristinn Hrafnsson spoke in english, but all the videos are in spanish version for the moment.

There is also an article of publico. es summarizing the conference:

It is posted in spanish by ANdReScR there: http://www.wikileaks-forum.com/index.php/topic,16491.0.html

Use google trad to have an idea of what he said:  http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.publico.es%2Fespana%2F447023%2Fel-secreto-bancario-se-utiliza-para-proteger-la-corrupcion&act=url

NB: I have not seen all the conferences of the event, of course, but...what I saw was very interesting and that people seemed to be very enthousiastic and warm-hearted.
It is the moment to learn spanish ;o)))
