Zagreb won't see Angela Merkel on a big EU celebration

Croatian Times

Angela Merkel has cancelled an official visit in Croatia on 30 June, leaving the government in Zagreb in an unpleasant position. The local media have blamed the Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and the government for the fact that Angela Merkel has decided not to come to Croatia just six days before the country joins the European Union. There was heavy criticism on the millions of Croatian kuna which were invested in the celebration in capital Zagreb now the German chancellor has pulled out of her visit. Experts have voiced different reasons for the unexpected move of the German leader, but most of them highlight the fact that Croatia failed to extradite Josip Perkovic to Germany. The former intelligence service member from the former Yugoslavia is wanted in Germany on suspicion of murdering a political dissident. The case was widely commented on in Croatian social networks because of the fact that Josip Perkovic's son has been an adviser to the current president Ivo Josipovic as well as to the former president Stjepan Mesic. Political analysts agree that both the actual and the former Croatian governments failed to extradite Josip Perkovic.
