Diamond miners in Africa
With sectarian militias in the Central African Republic said to be using funds from the sale of recovered rough diamonds to wage war against one another, the country's closest neighbor is ramping up its border security in order to prevent these precious gems from entering its territory, Diamond Intelligence reports. Cameroonian Minister of Mining Emmanuel Bonde said that his country has beefed up personnel on the border with the CAR, so as to ensure that the only precious gems entering the country have Kimberley Processcertification.

Cameroon is especially motivated to thwart the entry of conflict diamonds because at the last meeting of the KP in South Africa in November, the plenary called upon Cameroon – and the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo – to report on the scope of its diamond exports every month. It is cognizant of the fact that if the KP learns that conflict diamonds are leaving Cameroon, it, too will be suspended from the international body, just as the CAR was last May. Cameroon has only been a member of the group since the previous August 2012.
