Ecuador and China signed a military cooperation accord in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Ecuador and China signed on Wednesday in Quito an agreement on military assistance aimed at strengthening cooperation in the field of defense between both countries.

The deal was signed by Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa and Chinese Ambassador Wang Shi Xiong and it includes a US$4.8 million provision from China to Ecuador.

The funds will be used in defense-related clothing, taking into account the needs the different military units across the country have.

This agreement will boost the development of the Armed Forces of Ecuador, Espinosa said, stressing that the ties between Quito and the Asian giant are displayed in several fields that promote development.

During the signing ceremony, Espinosa said this pact is part of South-South cooperation, based on the principle of self-determination and mutual respect of the two countries' sovereignty.

The Chinese Ambassador highlighted Beijing's interest in deepening relations with the Latin American country based on "mutual respect among nations" and then offered the "full support" of his government to Ecuador.

He added that the present agreement opens a new phase in bilateral relations and shows how they are becoming stronger.

Ambassador Wang also announced that Espinosa will soon make an official visit to China to meet with her Chinese counterpart Chang Wanquan.
