The Internet, peer-reviewed: Hypothes.is

Quote
Solving the World’s Biggest Challenge.

Frustrated by the media?  Disillusioned by our seeming inability to come to grips with difficult issues?  Us too.  We think improving the credibility of the information we encounter is key to solving this problem.  In fact, we think it's humanity’s biggest challenge.

Imagine:

If as we encountered new information, in text or video, we could easily know the best analysis and insight on it—sentence by sentence, passage by passage.

What if we had confidence that this analysis truly represented the combined wisdom of the most informed individuals in those domains—not as dictated by a top-down hierarchy, but as measured objectively, statistically and transparently over time.

And what if the knowledge of that capability created a powerful incentive for authors to take extra care that their work met a high standard of excellence.

What if it became more difficult to publish information that was factually incorrect?

These goals are achievable with today’s technologies. Realizing them is the objective of Hypothes.is, a non-profit, open-source project led by Dan Whaley, the entrepreneur and coder who launched the online travel industry in 1995. It is advised by some of the leading minds in Internet technologies, rhetoric and language, reputation, identity and distributed systems. The Internet Archive (archive.org) has agreed to ensure long term storage of user content.

Exactly what is it?

Hypothes.is will be a distributed, open-source platform for the collaborative evaluation of information. It will enable sentence-level critique of written words combined with a sophisticated yet easy-to-use model of community peer-review. It will work wherever you are—as an overlay on top of news, blogs, scientific articles, books, terms of service, ballot initiatives, legislation and regulations, software code and more—without requiring participation of the underlying site.

Anonymous Operation Support Greece

OpSupport Greece

Dozens of videos on you tube about the Greek protests of the last months have been highlighting the activity of "state within a state" elements disrupting protests, creating violent clashes among protesters and with the riot police.

As the new "National Unity" government takes over the country's administration in preparation for elections in February 2012, public protests are again going to escalate and unfold.

Throughout October protests climaxed on the 15th (global protest day) and again the 28th (national public holiday commemorating Greek resistance towards Fascism and the Axis powers).

As we coming up to the 17th of November (another national day commemorating Greek rebellion against the military junta 1967-1974 and its eventual fall) it is very likely that public protestations will again reach a focus and escalate especially in urban areas, but in the country too. The nature of the commemoration is very likely to "pull" hundreds of thousands to the streets once more. Will the police repeat the "state within a state" practices?. Without a clear political leadership and a banker for Prime Minister, who will be in control is unclear, who will have the authority to steer the nation away from a path of clear armed repression. The events of 1974 are still very fresh in people's minds. The political left, the only absent force from the National Unity government will be now the only legitimate political voice in expressing the public's discontent.

The Anonymous OpSupport Greece could not come at a better time as a warning to these provocateurs that they will not be able to hide in anonymity for too long. On the other hand it provokes polarisation of the entire police force which can be counter-productive as many police institutions (eg their Trade Unions) have shown solidarity to the political expression of discontent and partook in the demonstrations. Let's watch this space for developments.
