I'm learning heaps researching links.  I started out thinking our problems were all political, then I thought they were all corporation induced, now I have come to the conclusion that there are a few really scary people controlling both the corporations, the politicians and the world.  >:(

Perhaps you may  see my point that all evil  begins with in an individual.  Each person  makes choices as to what they  think and do.
Institutions of business and governments are structures incapable of making a moral choice for good or evil.....only a moral entity (being) can do such a thing.

Evil corporations and governments are  made up of  individuals that  are to some varying degrees evil.   We can support evil and think we are not evil because we are not  the ones doing the  deed-   Think of the Catholic church that hid  predators/priests  they  supported  these priests by  not doing anything to  bring justice......It is just as evil to support evil or to refrain from  opposing evil  as it is to be the one  doing the bad deed directly.

Can you see that all evil deeds exist because   - a person   -has given them life and form and  energy ?   Degrees of evil exists because there exists  different levels of commitment  to  selfish  gain.

One person  lives every moment to acquire  every want without regard for  anther's suffering......another person  can  go only so far   they  have selfish wants  but also have a sense  of  limits to  how much suffering they can  cause  another......... another may never directly take part in an evil deed but they  prosper from the evil  or  in some form  give  the evil deed  a needed  assistance - they often times  think they are  innocents  just doing what they have to do to get by/ often times they actively avoid knowing about the suffering they help create .........then some  think because they only look away from  the suffering  they are  not evil themselves - but it is a form of evil to walk away from those that suffer.

I define evil as a selfish greed , fed as much by  perverted sense of entitlement as  by  a desire to feed their insatiable tortured want of some kind.

Perhaps that could be a good thread: to define evil

re : barking dog     It can be hard to know when we make a difference.
People don't always tell us when we do.

As you are in health care you may understand from this experience of mine....I would bring therapy dogs to Alzheimer's patients.  Here  there are 3 levels of Alzheimer patients and they are  placed in  long term living  residences  accordingly.  The highest level ward the patients usually paid no attention to myself or the therapy dogs....but the nurses would point to patients that they thought could  benefit....So I sat with these people and would place their hand on the dog to pat or to rest on the dogs chest (feel the heart beat).  I spoke gently and  would look about the room for clues about  their interests....photos of family or  pots of flowers someone tended for them, and converse about  these things.

There was no feed back from these patients  which did not bother the dogs but I  was wondering  if I was doing any good  for these people.   It can be depressing  when you are greeted by a blank stare -   I can see how if you work with  healing the body it is obvious if  a wound is healing  but for me  I usually go on feed back from the person as to  my effectiveness.

As I considered  ending my visits I asked the head nurse  if I was wasting my time.  I was not ready for her out pouring of thanks for my visits and her hope I would continue.   Though I saw no response from
a patient  the staff  that cared for them after I left did see a difference.
I was not there  to see this or ever told about  the positive effects from the visits.   ( pet therapy providers should be included in some meetings for feed back)

Even if we don't see or hear about  the good we have done....if our actions are good in their nature,  we can be sure  they are doing  good , if ever so quietly.  People have their own reasons for being quiet- some cannot speak, some don't know how to put the thought into words.

Keep doing good -  for the quiet ones that benefit.

I would love to see pet therapy in the acute psychiatric ward I work in.  There are some stray cats that come there from time to time and the patients feed them but the hospital gets someone to take them away.  It's sad and this issue has divided the staff a lot.  But pet therapy visits would be great.

As to evil; two quotes come to mind. I by the way believe we are all equally capable of evil and good - the human dilemma no less, given the right or wrong circumstances.  I think the story of the old Indian man telling his grand son about the two wolves in side us, one called Evil one called Good that are continually fighting and when the grandson asks "But Grandpa which one wins?" and he sagely answers, "The one you feed"

Edmund Burke in Ireland in the 1700's said something like this "Nothing ensures the flourishing of evil more, than when good people stand by and do nothing"

another quote - You won't remember the actions of your enemies but you will remember the inaction of your friends.

Thanks for your thoughts uncensored, always good to hear from you.  :)

As to evil  in humans - Yes, I agree  we have both possibilities inside, we  must be capable of both or  it would not be a personal choice we make to be good or evil,  but an automatic  behavior that is hardwired into us.

Moral beings have a freedom of choice-   Great quotes by the way  :-)
Much like fidelity to a partner  would not have too much meaning  if we were programed to  be unfailing  in our loyalty  to  them........it is only because I can choose  to  honor a vow  that the vow itself  has meaning.

I am good (ish) by choice  I am not evil (usually) also by choice.
Using an objective  definition of  evil as  extreme self intrest with no regard for how our behavior  effects another - which may or may not include satisfaction in inflicting suffering.

There are pet therapy groups in Australia . Though it may be your  admin policy is not inclined to include them.   If you find a program that is established with  well spoken advocates for  pet assisted work - they can deal with  the hospital  admins  objections and concerns for you.

Pet visitation  can be done by a person with or without a  health degree - the function is more of  comfort via human interaction.  Pet therapy  would be done by a health  professional  with a specific   therapeutic goal.
I will list a few orgs in Australia-  I am not familiar with any of these groups but if you find you wish to  move forward with  this I can contact
some groups in the USA that I belong to and  ask them  for  a few recommendations.

Feral cat groups would come  to the  health center and  take the cats away   or  as we sometimes will do,  have the feral cats  seen by a Vet for vaccines/general health/ neutered   then continue to  care for them  while they  stay put  where they are.  As they are neutered  the colony will not grow - and  with the vaccines there is  no chance of  passing on a disease  such as rabies.    Again  if you would like to call a  feral group in your area  let me know I work with  these groups in the USA - and can
find you a  feral cat rescue group in your area.

About ANDAAT
The Australian Network for the Development of Animal Assisted Therapies (ANDAAT) is a group of professional health, educational, social and service providers from many disciplines, along with experienced animal handlers and lovers, who have joined together under the umbrella of ANDAAT to promote the value and benefits of Animal Assisted Therapies (AAT), extend our understanding of the mechanisms by which AAT works, facilitate people finding AAT related resources and to share current knowledge with anyone that is interested in this growing area of therapy.

Research and validation into AAT (Animal Assisted Therapy), AAA (Animal Assisted Activities) and AAE (Animal Assisted Education) in Australia, is currently undertaken by Universities, tertiary educational institutes , several hospitals and private organisations. Interest in this area is now developed to the extent that there is a large international conference held every two years by the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organisations, that presents the latest research in all aspects into the connection between animals and humans. It is our goal to provide people with information and links to all these organisations, as well as to researchers, qualified therapists and providers of AAT.

Currently there are no recognised standards that apply to the training of therapy/service animals or for AAT therapist in Australia. ANDAAT hopes to lobby and campaign for common recognition, guidelines and laws pertaining to AAT throughout Australia. The qualifications of animals and therapists involved in all aspects of AAT need to be identified.

Article from September 16, 2001 - Bin Laden denying any involvement in 9/11

I remember watching the second plane hit the twin towers.  My son a chef had come home from work late and he had woken us up and said a plane had hit one of the twin towers.  It was around 1 am September 12 Australian time.  We got up and watched horrified as the second plane hit.

At this stage the commentators were saying something about Al Qaeda, this was the first I had heard of them, and then I remember about an hour later one of the commentators saying something like... "Word is just in that Al Quaeda is denying any involvement in these attacks"

This part of the commentary was never heard again, even though it was replayed ad nauseum for months.
